Overview of Coal reserves in India:

As of 2017, a total inventory of 315.148 billion tonnes of coal reserves is prepared by the Geological Survey of India, on the basis of resources estimated by CMPDI, MECL, GSI, SCCL and some Private/Public Entrepreneurs, out of which, Prime coking coal is 5.313 billion tonnes, medium and semi coking coal are 29.219 billion tones, Non-Coking Coal is 279.028 billion tonnes and Tertiary coal ( High Sulphur ) is 1.5888 billion tonnes.

Overview of Coal reserves in Odisha:

Considering the statewide inventory of geological resources of coal, India has 50 nos. of Gondwana coalfields and 18 nos. of Tertiary coalfields. Out of these, Odisha state has two coalfields with a share of 24.52% of the total inventory of the country. With two Gondwana coalfields namely Talcher coalfield and Ib River coalfield, Odisha is the second largest state with coal inventory of 77.285 billion tonnes.

Talcher coalfield, Odisha, is having the pride of the highest geological reserve of 51.163 billion tonnes in the country, whereas Ib River coalfield has the third highest geological reserve of 26.122 billion tonnes in the country.

Coal production in Odisha:

In 2016-17, total coal production in Odisha was 139,208,000 tonnes (139 million tonnes) which is 0.45% over the previous year.
