Bauxite Production in Odisha

In 2016-17, total bauxite production in Odisha was 12 million tonnes/annum which is a 10% increase from the previous year. Odisha has bauxite deposits of 1800 Million Tonnes.

A basic statistics:
Bauxite ore in Odisha contains on an average 40% alumina (AL2O3). So, 1 tonne of bauxite will generate about 0.4 tonnes of alumina. To get 1 ton of alumina, 2.5 tonnes of bauxite is required. To produce 1 ton of aluminum, 2 tonnes of alumina is required or 5 tonnes of bauxite.

  • National Aluminium Co. Ltd (Angul) has aluminium production capacity of 0.5 million ton per annum.
  • Hindalco Industries Ltd (Hirakud) capacity is 0.135 ton/annum.
  • Vedanta Aluminium Ltd (Jharsuguda) capacity is 1.75 million tonnes/annum.
  • Aditya Aluminium (Lapanga) capacity is 0.36 million ton/annum.
Total aluminium production capacity in Odisha is 2.745 million tonnes per annum. To feed these smelters, 13.725 million tonnes of bauxite is required.

So, with a bauxite reserve of 1800 million tonnes, Odisha can manage these plants for about 130 years (with the present day production capacity). But, about 700 million tonnes of bauxites can be used for commercial purpose. With this much of bauxite, Odisha will consume all its bauxite ores in 51 years.
