Lingaraj Temple: Odisha

Lingaraj Temple, Odisha:

Lingaraj temple was built in 617-657 AD and its height is about 55 meters. The Lingaraj Temple is said to have been built first by the ruler Jajati (Yayati) Kesari in the 7th century who shifted his capital from Jajpur to Bhubaneswar. Bhubaneswar remained as the Kesari capital, till Nripati Kesari founded Cuttack in the 10th century. It is also believed that in the 11th century, Lingaraj Temple was built by the King Jajati Keshari (other Kesari kings of the same name), who belonged to Soma Vansh. It is thought that when the King shifted his capital from Jaipur to Bhubaneshwar, he started the construction of Lingaraj Temple.

The temple got global attention as much as it did during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Lingaraj Temple here on Sunday 16th April 2017.
