Life Journey of a Great Hero: (Biju Patnaik)
1916: Biju Babu was born on 5th Mach, at Anand Bhawan in Tulsipur, Cuttack.
1923: In early childhood, he went on an operation to cure a serious health problem.
1926: Biju Babu was injured and assaulted by the British police during his visit to Mahatma Gandhi at Swaraj Ashram, Cuttack.
1927: He left mission school to join Ravenshaw Collegiate School.
1932: He made an adventurous cycle journey from Cuttack to Peshawar while he was studying I. SC.
1934: He dropped out of Bachelor of Science to join the pilot training.
1937: He joined as a pilot in Indian National Airways.
1938: He married Gyana Patnaik.
1941: On 17th February, his father Lakshminarayan Patnaik passed away.
1942: His mother Ashalata Patnaik Devi passed away on 20th April. During the Quit India movement, when Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, and other great freedom fighters were in jail, Jay Prakash Narayan and Ram Manohar Lohia continued the movement by hiding from the British police. The great pilot Biju Babu showed his patriotism by transporting these freedom fighters from one place to other.
1943: On 13th January he was arrested by the British police and was sent to prison for two years for participating in the Quit India Movement.
1944: Founded his company B. Pattanaik and Co.
1945: He was freed from prison on parole.
1946: He was elected as a member of Odisha executive Board.
1947: Under the instruction of Pandit Nehru, he communicated with the freedom fighters of Indonesia and was instrumental in the Independence of Indonesia from Dutch. The same year, he was elected to the Odisha legislative assembly from Cuttack.
1950: He was awarded by Indonesia.
1951: Established Kalinga award with the help of UNESCO.
1952: Elected from Ganjam’s Bhanjanagar assembly seat on a Congress ticket.
1957: Again elected from the same seat on a congress ticket.
1960: Published Kalinga Daily newspaper on 2nd October.
1961: Elected as the president of state congress party. Elected from Choudwar assembly seat on June 23 and took oath as chief minister of Odisha. He started various progressive works in his tenure: Paradeep Port, Paradeep Express Highway, Hydropower plant at Balimela, Talcher thermal plant, MiG fighter plane engine at Sunabeda among others. For the development of higher education, he established Rourkela Engineering College, Regional Institute of Education, Bhubaneswar, Sainik School, Brahmapur and Sambalpur Universities, Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Burla Engineering College and medical college among others.
1962: Received the permission of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to build Paradeep Port. Appointed as special advisor to the prime minister during Indo-China war.
1963: Resigned from the post of chief minister according to Kamraj Plan.
1964: Organization of a special session of Indian National Congress in Odisha.
1967: Formation of Khana Commission against him.
1969: Khanna commission report proved wrong in January. He left congress party and formed a regional party Utkal congress.
1971: As a candidate for Utkal Congress he was defeated from four assembly seat and one Loksabha seat. He won the by-election from Rajnagar
1973: Indonesia honored him with Bhumiputra Award.
1974: He was elected to the state assembly as a candidate of Utkal Congress.
1975: During the emergency, he was arrested in Delhi on 26th June.
1979: Appointed as a minister of Mining, Steel, and Coal in Charan Singh government.
1980: Elected from Kendrapada Loksabha seat.
1984: Reelected from Kendrapada Loksabha seat.
1985: As a Janata Dal candidate, he was simultaneously elected from Bhubaneswar assembly seat and Kendrapada Loksabha seat. Resigned from Loksabha seat and took the post of state opposition leader.
1990: Elected from Bhubaneswar assembly seat from a Janata Dal and took oath as the chief minister of Odisha on 5th March.
1995: Reelected from Bhubaneswar assembly seat and took the rein of state opposition leader. On August 14, he was awarded the highest national award of Indonesia, the 'Bintang Jasa Utama'
1996: elected to the state assembly from Aska and Cuttack Loksabha seat. Resigned from the post of opposition leader on 5th May. Also resigned from Loksabha.
1997: Attended a Janata Dal meeting on 28th March. Got a severe chest pain during the meeting and was shifted to Delhi for treatment. Hospitalized in Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on 29th March. He took his last breath on 17th April.
