Indonesia Tsunami: Death Toll Reaches Above 800
Massive Tsunami Generated by 7.5 Earthquake Hits the Indonesian Island of Sulawesi on September 28, 2018 The death toll from an earthquake that prompted a tsunami on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi has risen to 840. Many people were reported trapped in the rubble of buildings brought down in the magnitude 7.5 earthquake which struck on Friday and triggered tsunami waves as high as six meters (20 feet). Almost all the deaths have been recorded in the coastal city of Palu. Amid a flurry of smaller tremors, the main quake struck at the 6.02pm local time (12.02pm BST), according to the US Geological Survey. Shortly after, a tsunami warning was issued and then lifted, but it appears authorities were mistaken in their forecasts as the tsunami struck a short while later. Tourist destination Bali, hundreds of miles south of Sulawesi, has not been affected .
