South Korea Plans Decapitation Unit to Scare North Korea

Image
Seoul is preparing to target North Korea's leader after it rattled nerves with its sixth nuclear test and ramped up tensions with the US. In an effort to stop North Korea from building up its nuclear arsenal, South Korea is looking to target Kim Jong-un. Meanwhile, the South Korean military has been busy retooling helicopters and transporting planes to infiltrate North Korea at night time, The New York Times reports. The highly unusual move for the South Korean Government to announce its plans to try and assassinate a head of state illustrates just how determined Seoul is to scare Kim. The last time South Korea is known to have plotted to assassinate the North Korean leadership, nothing went as planned. In the late 1960s, after North Korean commandoes tried to ransack the presidential palace in Seoul, South Korea secretly trained misfits plucked from prison or off the streets to sneak into North Korea and slit the throat of its leader, Kim Il-sung. When the mission was a...

Educating Girls, Ending Child Marriage

Image
A World Bank Report: Every day, 41,000 girls marry before they are 18 years old. That’s 15 million girls every year. While child marriage can happen to both boys and girls, in most places around the world, the practice mostly affects girls. Child marriage deeply affects child brides, their children, their families, and even countries. Ending it is a target under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Indeed, child marriage will cost developing countries trillions of dollars by 2030, according to a new report by the World Bank Group and the International Center for Research on Women. Girls often get married because of pressure from parents and relatives, poverty and lack of alternatives. Limited access to quality education and families’ prioritization of boys’ rather than girls’ education–in part because of limited job opportunities–contribute to perpetuating the practice. The impact of child marriage can be devastating for child brides in terms of lost educatio...

North Korea Warns US As UN Plans To Slap Pyongyang With Sanctions

Image
The United Nations Security Council is set to vote Monday afternoon on a watered-down US-drafted resolution to impose new sanctions on North Korea over its latest nuclear test, diplomats said, but it was unclear whether China and Russia would support it.  The draft resolution appears to have been weakened in a bid to appease Pyongyang’s allies Beijing and Moscow following negotiations over the past few days. In order to pass, a resolution needs nine of the 15 Security Council members to vote in favor and no vetoes by any of the five permanent members - the United States, Britain, France, Russia, and China.  The draft, seen Sunday, no longer proposes blacklisting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The initial draft proposed he be subjected to a travel ban and asset freeze along with four other North Korea officials. The final text only lists one of those officials.

Sir Richard Branson Extends Hands To Irma Victims

Image
The hurricane swept through the British Virgin Islands and St Martin, flooded Havana and inundated large parts of the Florida peninsula. It was downgraded to a tropical storm yesterday as it continued to move north towards the US state of Georgia.  Sir Richard posted a series of pictures of Necker, the island which he owns, where palm trees lay across flooded gardens and workers’ homes had been flattened. Power boats and catamaran dinghies were upturned.  Sir Richard Branson has called for a Marshall Plan to rebuild Caribbean islands destroyed by Hurricane Irma which also blew down his holiday home.

Irma Weakens To a Tropical Storm after Destroying Florida

Image
Irma weakened Monday to a tropical storm, losing some of its punch but still packing powerful winds that stretched from central Florida to North Carolina. The remnants of Hurricane Irma swept north through Florida on Monday, leaving behind a trail of debris, flooding and power outages after the storm roared up the state’s Gulf Coast and brought its drenching rainfall and battering winds into Georgia. As the storm roared through Florida, thrashing winds tore down trees and power lines alike, and by Monday afternoon officials said the storm appears to have cut power to a majority of the state’s 20.6 million residents. Even as millions waited to see when power companies could navigate debris-strewn roads and restore their access to electricity — and with it, things such as air conditioning and refrigeration — Irma surged ever onward, sweeping rain bands through Florida’s core and threatening a dangerous storm surge in the populous Tampa Bay area and along the Gulf Coast. ...

King Vikramaditya

In days gone by, Vikramaditya, a great king ruled over a prosperous kingdom from his capital at Ujjain. Mighty as the sun – he was a king with immense love for learning as well as for adventure. King Vikram sat in his court for hours every day, rewarding the virtuous, punishing the evil doers, and encouraging scholars, poets, musicians, and artists. During such sessions, numerous people came to meet him. They brought him gifts of jewels, gold or other precious things. Among such visitors was a mendicant who, on every visit, presented the king with a fruit. The king accepted his humble gift with the same show of courtesy with which he would have accepted a diamond from a rich merchant. He used to hand over the fruit to the royal storekeeper. One morning, the mendicant gave him his usual gift just when the king was going out to inspect his stables. The king accepted the fruit all right and went out while playing with it, tossing it up and then catching it as it came down. It ...

Florida Without Power: Irma After Effect

Image
Even as Irma was downgraded from a Category 3 hurricane to a tropical storm, millions remained without power, while the police and the National Guard carried out search-and-rescue operations across the state. Many areas faced fuel shortages, as well as downed power lines and standing water. Fallen trees, ripped from their roots by surging waters and whipping winds that reached 130 miles per hour, blocked roadways — further hampering the recovery. While Texas residents were still reeling from the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, two weeks later on Sunday, Hurricane Irma made landfall on America’s southeastern state of Florida causing widespread damage to property, businesses, and crops, and taking the lives of at least four people. As the overall impact of Hurricane Irma on the country is yet to be assessed, analysts predict that the effect of the hurricane on the US economy would be significant ranging from $150 billion to $300 billion. Tourism, the state’s large...

Longer Hours In An Air Conditioner Workplace May Be Disastrous

Image
Health Issues At Corporate: Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Humans need oxygen to live. The minimum oxygen concentration in the air required for human breathing is 19.5 percent. The human body takes the oxygen; transports it to the other parts of the body via the red blood cells. Each cell uses and requires oxygen to thrive. The question is whether an employee, who spends more than eight hours in a centralized air conditioning room, gets enough oxygen for a healthy respiratory system. Cool air does not mean oxygenated air. Can an air conditioner supply enough oxygen inside a closed room? A small family is OK. Imagine a corporate building with 1000 employees inside. You do your assessment: how much oxygen an individual needs in a given period of time; and how much an air conditioner supplies. Background: At standard atmospheric pressure and temperature, dry air, by volume is approximately composed of: Nitrogen 78.1%; Oxygen 20.9%; Argon 0.9%; Other 0.1%. Respiratory P...
